Target Information
IPO11 functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. It serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates and mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) via nucleoporin binding. The complex is translocated through the pore by an energy-requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. Ran binding at the nucleoplasmic side causes dissociation of the complex and re-export of importin to the cytoplasm, where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. This asymmetric Ran distribution confers directionality of nuclear import. IPO11 mediates nuclear import of UBE2E3 and RPL12.
