Ferritin은 원핵생물 및 진핵생물 모두에서 주요한 세포 내 철 저장 단백질입니다.
Ferritin은 heavy (H)와 light (L) 사슬로 구성된 24개의 소단위체로 이루어져 있으며, 약 450 kDa의 분자량을 가진 holoenzyme입니다.
Ferritin은 최대 4,500개의 철 원자를 저장할 수 있으며, 철을 용해성·무독성 형태로 저장하는 역할을 합니다.
Light chain ferritin 유전자의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환 및 hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome과 관련이 있습니다.
Ferritin 유전자는 여러 pseudogene을 가지며, 철 항상성 유지에 중요한 역할을 하는 고도로 보존된 단백질입니다.
