Target Information
BST2 (also known as CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in the development and growth of B-cells. Surface expression of BST2 on fibroblast cell lines facilitates stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines.
BST2 is highly expressed during B-cell development (from pro-B precursors to plasma cells), as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, DCs, and myeloma cells. Studies show that BST2 inhibits retrovirus release from human cells, a process antagonized by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu.
Depletion of BST2 abolishes the viral requirement for Vpu, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for HIV/AIDS. BST2 dysfunction is also associated with stomatitis.
