Target Information
PLAC4 (placenta-specific protein 4) was initially discovered as a gene whose mRNA is expressed in placental syncytiotrophoblast and choriocarcinoma cells.
Although the function of PLAC4 remains unclear, its gene is located on chromosome 21q22.3.
Due to its genomic location and release of mRNA transcripts into maternal bloodstream, PLAC4 has been proposed as a potential marker for noninvasive prenatal detection of chromosome 21 aneuploidy.
However, other studies suggest PLAC4 mRNA levels are not altered in maternal circulation of pregnancies with trisomy 21.
