Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT proteins are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases and form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators.
STAT5 mediates responses to ligands such as IL-2, IL-3, IL-7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and various growth hormones.
Activation of STAT5 in myeloma and lymphoma associated with TEL/JAK2 gene fusion is independent of cell stimulus and essential for tumorigenesis.
The mouse counterpart induces expression of BCL2L1/BCL-X(L), suggesting an anti-apoptotic role.
