Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family, expressed on most nucleated cells, predominantly germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing cell adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance. It serves as a receptor for hepatitis C virus and interacts with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane.
Antibodies to CD81 exhibit anti-proliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines, especially large cell lymphomas. CD81 is located in a tumor-suppressor gene region and is considered a candidate gene for malignancies.
