Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike (S) protein is crucial for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, making it a key target for antibodies, inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD) within the S1 subunit binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, showing higher affinity than SARS-CoV.
S1 contains the RBD responsible for ACE2 binding, while S2 mediates membrane fusion.
The full-length SARS-CoV-2 S protein (1273 amino acids) includes:
- Signal peptide (1–13 aa)
- S1 subunit (14–685 aa)
- S2 subunit (686–1273 aa)
The S-ECD represents the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
