Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The Spike (S) protein is essential for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, and serves as a key target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, showing higher affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
- S1 subunit (aa 14–685): Contains RBD that specifically binds ACE2 receptors.
- S2 subunit (aa 686–1273): Responsible for membrane fusion.
- S-ECD: Extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
