Target Information

AIRE is a transcriptional regulator protein that binds to DNA as a dimer and tetramer, but not as a monomer, and may be involved in the regulation of gene expression.
This nuclear protein consists of 545 amino acids with an HSR domain, two PHD-type zinc fingers, and a SAND domain. It may form homodimers, homotetramers, and nuclear bodies, and interacts with transcriptional coactivators CBP and CREBBP.
Three isoforms of AIRE are reported, one of which is predicted to be a candidate for nuclear-mediated decay (NMD).
AIRE plays a key role in immune regulation and mediates E3 ubiquitin ligase activity.
Defects in AIRE are associated with autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), a rare autosomal-recessive systemic autoimmune disease.
