Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing.
It cleaves long dsRNAs and short hairpin pre-microRNAs (miRNA) into fragments of 21–23 nucleotides with 3′ overhangs, producing siRNAs and mature miRNAs.
These small RNAs guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs for degradation or translational repression.
RNA interference (RNAi) mediated by siRNAs controls the elimination of transcripts from repetitive DNA elements and exogenous viral RNAs.
The miRNA pathway specifically regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level.
