Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) is a low molecular weight acidic keratin that pairs with Cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as endocrine, exocrine, and mesothelial cells. CK18 is predominantly found in non-squamous epithelia and is expressed in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only CK8 and CK18. Mutations in the CK18 gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns aid in distinguishing epithelial malignancies and are valuable in tumor diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometry assays.
