Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) is a type A (acidic) low molecular weight keratin that forms complexes with Cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as in endocrine, exocrine, and mesothelial cells. Cytokeratin 18 is typically found in non-squamous epithelia and is present in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only Cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the Cytokeratin 18 gene have been associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified. Cytokeratin subtype expression is widely used to distinguish epithelial malignancies, and Cytokeratin antibodies are valuable tools in tumor diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometry assays.
