Target Information
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a 20 kDa protein belonging to the IL-6 receptor family. It binds to a heterodimeric receptor composed of a LIF-specific subunit (gp190/LIFR) and gp130, shared with other IL-6 family members.
LIF is expressed in thymus, lung, and neuronal tissues, and its expression is up-regulated by cytokines such as TNFα and IL-17. Elevated LIF levels have been reported in rheumatoid arthritis, neural injury, systemic inflammation, and tuberculosis.
LIF is known for its inhibition of embryonic stem cell differentiation in mice and its role in stem cell self-renewal. Human and mouse LIF share 79% sequence homology and exhibit cross-species activity, though stem cell differentiation inhibition is mouse-specific.
