Target Information

Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) is responsible for transferring high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes: sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK, encoded by separate genes. Mitochondrial creatine kinase occurs in two oligomeric forms—dimers and octamers—unlike the exclusively dimeric cytosolic isoenzymes. Overexpression of ubiquitous mitochondrial creatine kinase has been associated with malignant cancers exhibiting poor prognosis, possibly due to high energy turnover and reduced apoptosis. Ubiquitous mitochondrial creatine kinase shares approximately 80% homology with the coding exons of sarcomeric mitochondrial creatine kinase.
