Cytokeratin 3는 keratin 유전자 군에 속하는 단백질로, type II cytokeratin은 기본 또는 중성 단백질로 구성되어 있으며, 단순 및 중층 상피 조직의 분화 과정에서 이형적 keratin 사슬의 쌍으로 발현됩니다. Cytokeratin 3는 특히 각막 상피에서 KRT12와 함께 발현되며, 이들 유전자 돌연변이는 Meesmann's Corneal Dystrophy와 관련이 있습니다. Type II cytokeratin 유전자는 염색체 12q12-q13 영역에 클러스터되어 있습니다. (NCBI Gene description)
