Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase induces intermediate filament breakdown and activates ATP- and myosin light chain–dependent contractile events, leading to cytoskeletal rearrangements that facilitate lipid droplet–mitochondria interactions and cholesterol transport for steroidogenesis.
