Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated in animals. Adipose cells secrete numerous physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein regulated hormonally and localized to the surface of lipid droplets. Upon lipolytic stimuli, it is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, subsequently inhibiting hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which mediates triacylglycerol hydrolysis—the major form of stored energy.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known, both encoded by a single-copy gene through differential splicing events.
