Target Information
In cardiac tissue, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is synthesized as a 134 amino acid precursor (prepro-BNP), which is cleaved by proteases to form a 26 aa signal peptide and a 108 aa pro-BNP. Proteolytic digestion of pro-BNP results in formation of a 76 aa amino-terminal NT-proBNP and a biologically active 32 aa BNP hormone molecule. Both proBNP and NT-proBNP circulate in human plasma and have been proposed as markers for early diagnosis of left ventricular dysfunction as well as prognostic markers for possible cardiac complications in patients with heart failure.
