T cell receptors (TCR) discriminate foreign from self-peptides presented by MHC class II molecules, which is crucial for adaptive immune response.

Autoantibodies to V beta segments have been found in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, potentially modulating inflammatory responses.
Most human T cells express TCR alpha-beta with either CD4 or CD8 (single positive, SP). A smaller subset lacks both (double negative, DN), often increased in autoimmune or immunodeficiency conditions.
Gamma-delta T cells, found mainly in epithelium, exhibit less diversity and distinct antigen recognition, with subsets showing antitumor and immunoregulatory activity.
