Target Information
SOAT1 (sterol O-acyltransferase-1), also designated ACAT1, is a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesterol esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA).
The human SOAT1 gene maps to chromosome 1 and encodes a protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in tissues such as liver, kidney, adrenal glands, and macrophages.
SOAT1 plays a key role in cholesterol homeostasis and foam cell formation, contributing to atherosclerosis progression.
SOAT2 (sterol O-acyltransferase-2), also known as ACAT2, catalyzes cholesterol esterification and is expressed in human intestinal cells. SOAT2 deficiency can lead to severe mental retardation and hypotonus.
