Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone involved in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It is encoded by the obese (ob) gene and primarily produced by adipocytes, with smaller amounts secreted by gastric and placental cells.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells. The hormone influences feeding behavior, energy expenditure, thermogenesis, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, and immune responses.
Research has linked leptin to conditions such as obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Defects in leptin production can lead to severe hereditary obesity in humans and rodents.
