Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family, which plays a key role in alcohol metabolism. It exists in two major isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—distinguished by electrophoretic mobility and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while about 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic form, lacking the mitochondrial isozyme. This difference is associated with a higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
