Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms, cytosolic and mitochondrial, differ in electrophoretic mobility, kinetics, and localization. Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while approximately 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic form, lacking the mitochondrial isozyme. This difference may be associated with a higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
