Target Information
Pulmonary surfactant is a complex mixture of phospholipids and proteins secreted from type II alveolar cells. It reduces surface tension at the alveolar air-liquid interface, ensuring alveolar stability for normal ventilation. Four distinct surfactant proteins are identified: SP-A, SP-B, SP-C, and SP-D.
- SP-A (28–36 kDa) and SP-D (43 kDa): collagenous carbohydrate-binding proteins
- SP-B (8–9 kDa) and SP-C (4 kDa): non-collagenous hydrophobic proteins
SP-B is expressed in pulmonary adenocarcinomas with acinar, papillary, bronchioloalveolar, and solid growth patterns, but not in squamous cell or large cell carcinomas of the lung or nonpulmonary adenocarcinomas. ProSP-B is glycosylated in the Golgi apparatus and undergoes proteolytic processing by a cathepsin D-like protease.
