Target Information

AOX1 (Aldehyde oxidase 1) is a 1338 amino acid cytoplasmic enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of various aldehydes, producing hydrogen peroxide. Under certain conditions, AOX1 can also generate superoxide free radicals. Dysregulation of oxygen radical metabolism is associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor neurons. AOX1 is highly expressed in the ventral horn of the spinal cord, and its gene locus overlaps with chromosomal regions implicated in ALS2, suggesting AOX1 as a candidate gene for ALS2.
