EWSR1 유전자는 다양한 세포 과정(유전자 발현, 신호 전달, RNA 처리 및 수송)에 관여하는 다기능 단백질을 암호화합니다. 단백질은 N-말단 전사 활성화 도메인과 C-말단 RNA 결합 도메인을 포함합니다. 이 유전자의 염색체 전위는 전사인자 유전자의 DNA 결합 도메인과 융합된 키메라 단백질을 생성하여 종양 형성과 관련됩니다. 이러한 변이는 Ewing 육종 및 신경외배엽종 등 다양한 종양을 유발할 수 있습니다. 또한 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변형이 존재하며, 관련된 유사 유전자가 염색체 1과 14에서 확인되었습니다.
