Target Information
The OPRM1 gene encodes the mu opioid receptor, which is the primary site of action for opioids such as morphine, heroin, fentanyl, and methadone. It also binds endogenous opioid peptides like beta-endorphin and enkephalins.
The receptor belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor family and is one of three major opioid receptor types—mu, kappa, and delta—each with distinct pharmacologic profiles.
