PDGFRB is a receptor tyrosine kinase implicated in atherogenesis and cell transformation by the SIS oncogene. These growth factors act as mitogens for mesenchymal-origin cells.
The receptor forms homodimers or heterodimers depending on the bound growth factor, involving PDGF receptor alpha and beta chains.
Located on chromosome 5, PDGFRB is flanked by genes encoding GM-CSF and M-CSF receptor, potentially linked to the 5-q syndrome.
A translocation between chromosomes 5 and 12 fusing PDGFRB (CD140b) with ETV6 can result in chronic myeloproliferative disorders with eosinophilia.
