Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species, making homology-based identification difficult. The MRPL21 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with multiple transcript variants identified, some of which may undergo nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).
