Target Information

Megsin (SerpinB7, TP55) is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which are essential for maintaining glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor, potentially inactivating MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—proteins responsible for extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of megsin increases mesangial cell numbers and leads to mesangial matrix expansion with immune complex deposition, suggesting its involvement in renal structure regulation and various nephropathies.
