Target Information
SLC26A5 is a member of the SLC26A/SulP transporter family and is specifically expressed in the outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, playing a crucial role in auditory processing. Intracellular anions act as extrinsic voltage sensors that bind to this protein, triggering conformational changes required for rapid length changes in OHCs.
Mutations in the SLC26A5 gene are associated with non-syndromic hearing loss. Alternate transcriptional splice variants encoding different isoforms have also been characterized.
