Neurofilaments are intermediate filament proteins found specifically in neurons, composed of three major proteins: NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H. NF-H is crucial for maintaining neuronal caliber and plays an important role in mature axons. It is also implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
