Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It functions as a stem cell marker with reversible expression on human hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 may act as a surface receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis and regulation of adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic and progenitor cells.
It likely mediates the attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may serve as a scaffold for glycans that facilitate binding to lectins. CD34 also presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins, and its intracellular domain can be phosphorylated by activated protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
