Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology identification difficult. The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein unique to mammalian mitochondria, located telomeric to and transcribed opposite of the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS22 exists on chromosome Xq.
