Target Information
Upf1 is an active component of nonsense-mediated decay (NMD), an mRNA surveillance mechanism in eukaryotic cells that degrades mRNAs containing premature termination codons.
It functions as an ATP-dependent RNA helicase located in the cytoplasm and is a component of cytoplasmic P-bodies.
Upf1 phosphorylation mediates translation repression associated with NMD, enabling mRNA accessibility to the NMD machinery.
Other active components of NMD include Upf2 and Upf3, which exhibit perinuclear and nucleocytoplasmic localization, respectively.
