Target Information

The Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen acts as an oncofetal antigen, showing low expression in normal adult tissues but increasing to fetal levels in hyperplasia or malignancy. It is considered a pan-carcinoma marker. This gene belongs to the mucin family and encodes a membrane-bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein anchored to the apical surface of many epithelia. The degree of glycosylation varies by cell type. It includes a 20 amino acid variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) domain, with repeats ranging from 20 to 120 among individuals. The protein provides protection by binding to pathogens and functions in cell signaling. Overexpression, altered localization, and glycosylation changes are associated with carcinomas. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though not all full-length sequences are known.
