Target Information
The Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen acts as an oncofetal antigen, showing low expression in normal adult tissues but increasing to fetal levels in hyperplasia or malignancy. It serves as a pan-carcinoma marker. This gene belongs to the mucin family and encodes a membrane-bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein anchored to epithelial surfaces via a transmembrane domain. Glycosylation levels vary by cell type. It includes a 20 amino acid variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) domain, with the number of repeats ranging from 20 to 120 among individuals. The protein functions in pathogen binding and cell signaling. Overexpression, aberrant localization, and altered glycosylation are associated with carcinomas. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though only some are fully characterized.
