Target Information

ERN1 (serine/threonine kinase) or endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1 is a human homologue of the yeast Ire1 gene product. It possesses intrinsic kinase and endoribonuclease activity and plays a key role in endoplasmic reticulum-based stress signaling.
IRE1 acts as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the ER, initiating the unfolded protein response by splicing XBP1 mRNA into a potent transcriptional activator.
Null mutants are viable, but IRE1 is essential under stress conditions that cause unfolded proteins to accumulate in the ER. Depletion of IRE1p can lead to apoptosis under such stress conditions.
