Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins have been detected in some microvascular endothelial cells. At least 20 different CKs, ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8, can be identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CKs are classified into two major types: Type I (acidic polypeptides) and Type II (basic polypeptides). Typically, epithelial cells express at least one member of each type.
Monoclonal antibodies targeting cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
