Fibroblast growth factor 4 (FGF4)는 섬유아세포 성장인자(FGF) 계열에 속하며, 세포 성장 및 생존에 관여하는 광범위한 활성을 지닌 단백질입니다. 배아 발생, 조직 재생, 암 발생 과정에서 줄기세포의 성장과 분화 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
FGF4는 강한 종양 형성 활성으로 확인되었으며, 혈관신생(angiogenesis)을 촉진하는 인자로 알려져 있습니다. 성체 생쥐의 고환, 장, 뇌 등 고혈관화된 조직에서 발현되며, 뼈 형성과 사지 발달에 있어 SHH(Sonic Hedgehog) 신호전달 경로를 통해 기능합니다. 또한 신경 전구세포의 증식과 신경 분화 조절에 관여하며, 인간 배아줄기세포의 성장 촉진 및 분화 조절에도 중요한 역할을 합니다.
