Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and regulation of epithelial layer formation. It links E-cadherin to alpha-catenin, anchoring the complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also interacts with signaling pathways including tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless, influencing morphogenesis and cell proliferation. It is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and epithelial tissues. Dysregulation or mutation of beta-catenin is associated with pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes such as cyclin D and c-myc.
