alpha-Internexin은 신경 발달 초기에 발현되는 Class IV 중간 필라멘트 단백질입니다. 이 단백질은 NF-L, NF-M, NF-H와 유사한 서열 모티프와 인트론 구조를 가지지만, 별개의 단백질로 구분됩니다. 성숙한 뉴런의 다수는 NF-L, NF-M, NF-H 외에도 alpha-Internexin을 포함하며, 일부 뉴런에서는 유일한 뉴로필라멘트 단백질로 존재합니다. 따라서 alpha-Internexin에 대한 항체는 뉴런의 분류 및 추적 연구에 유용한 도구입니다. 또한 발달 초기 단계에서의 발현 특성으로 인해 신경 전구세포 및 신경계로 분화된 세포의 마커로 활용될 수 있습니다. 뇌종양 연구에서의 적용 가능성도 제시되고 있습니다.
