Target Information
Interphotoreceptor retinol-binding protein (IRBP) is a large glycoprotein that binds retinoids and is found primarily in the interphotoreceptor matrix of the retina between the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells.
It is thought to transport retinoids between these cell layers, playing a critical role in the visual process.
The human IRBP gene (~9.5 kbp) consists of four exons separated by three introns (1.6–1.9 kbp). The mRNA (~4.3 kb) encodes a glycosylated protein of 135 kDa.
The amino acid sequence divides into four contiguous homology domains (33–38% identity), suggesting gene duplication events.
The first three domains and part of the fourth are encoded by the first large exon (3,180 bp), while the remainder of the fourth domain is encoded in the last three exons (191, 143, and ~740 bp).
