CXCR1은 G-protein-coupled receptor 패밀리에 속하며, interleukin 8 (IL8)의 수용체로 작용합니다. IL8과 높은 친화도로 결합하며, G-protein을 통한 2차 신호전달 시스템을 매개합니다. 마우스의 knockout 연구 결과, 이 단백질은 척수 발달 과정에서 oligodendrocyte 전구세포의 이동을 억제하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
이 유전자는 IL8RB 및 IL8RBP(IL8RB의 pseudogene)와 함께 염색체 2q33–q36 영역에 위치한 유전자 클러스터를 형성합니다.
