Target Information
UCP4 (Uncoupling Protein 4) is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial protein belonging to the mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats. It functions as a mitochondrial transport carrier facilitating the transfer of anions and protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. UCP4 reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and participates in thermoregulatory heat production by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat. It is primarily expressed in adult and fetal brain, with lower levels in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
