Target Information
Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for the distribution of organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes throughout the cell. Members of the heterotrimeric kinesin II family, including KIF3A, B, and C, mediate anterograde transport of membrane-bound organelles in neurons and melanosomes, and facilitate transport between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. KIF3A also plays roles in neurogenesis and L-R axis determination during embryonic development. Loss of KIF3A function in mouse photoreceptors causes apoptotic cell death, indicating its essential role in kinesin II-mediated transport and proper cell fate determination.
