Target Information
Ubiquitin-like protein ISG15 plays a key role in the innate immune response to viral infection, functioning through conjugation to target proteins (ISGylation) or as a free protein. It is secreted from monocytes in response to type I interferons and promotes NK-cell proliferation and cytotoxicity. Expression is induced by IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, or IFN-omega, as well as by interferon regulatory factors and influenza B virus. ISG15 acts as a cytokine and may amplify immunomodulatory effects of interferons. Mutations in ISG15 can cause Immunodeficiency 38 with basal ganglia calcification (IMD38).
