Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

AR signaling plays a key role in development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, as well as nonreproductive organs including muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase activity, and its phosphorylation state is linked to MEK1/2 pathway activity. Dysregulation of AR signaling is associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in the AR gene can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
