Adrenergic receptors (ARs) belong to the 7-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily that binds endogenous catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Nine receptor subtypes have been identified: three alpha-1 (1A/D, 1B, 1C), three alpha-2 (2A, 2B, 2C), and three beta (1, 2, 3).

ARs are involved in various physiological and pathological processes including:

• Hypertension
• Cardiac dysfunction (congestive heart failure, ischemia, arrhythmias)
• Diabetes
• Glaucoma
• Depression
• Impotence

Beta-adrenergic receptors (BARs) also play roles in development, behavior, cardiac function, smooth muscle tone, and metabolism.
Mice lacking the B1AR gene often die prenatally, and survivors exhibit abnormal cardiac function.
Thyroid hormones regulate B1AR density at the transcriptional level, modulated by the catecholamine-sensitive adenylyl cyclase system.
Regulation by cAMP has been linked to CRE modulator (CREM) family transcription factors in transformed cell lines.
