Target Information
Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is a major protein component of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in human plasma, with a molecular mass of approximately 260–500 kDa. ApoB binds to specific cell membrane receptors, facilitating the removal of LDL and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol from circulation.
LDL acts as the carrier protein for cholesterol in the blood and mediates uptake and clearance of cholesterol via LDL receptor binding. Oxidatively modified LDL is found in atherosclerotic lesions and is recognized by macrophages through scavenger receptors A and CD36. Elevated ApoB levels are associated with premature atherosclerosis.
ApoB exists in two major isoforms—ApoB-48 and ApoB-100—encoded by a single gene. ApoB-48 is produced through RNA editing of the ApoB-100 transcript, introducing a stop codon that results in a shorter protein. Mutations in the ApoB gene can cause disorders such as hypobetalipoproteinemia and hypercholesterolemia due to ligand-defective ApoB.
Normal plasma ApoB levels are approximately 800 mg/L.
